TMI….TOO MUCH INFORMATION!!!

We live in a world where we are bombarded with too much information. There are signs telling us where to go, where to shop, what to buy, what to eat, what to wear, where to live, what to drive, who to be, how to communicate, what doctor to see, what pills to take, what gym to work out at, what to read—the list goes on and on!!! It’s exhausting. With stimuli constantly surrounding us, who has time to stop and look at the design that is in every aspect of our lives? I do!

Even as a young boy, I loved design. I noticed details that others seemed to overlook. I realized at a very early age that with every design, there was a creator behind it. Whether it was an artist, sculptor, craftsman, or engineer, someone had to create every human-made thing we touch and see. At first humans crafted the crudest of tools that helped them to hunt and gather, shelter and clothing to protect from the elements, and vessels in which to store things. In time, these simplest of items started becoming embellished. Caves were painted with stories, walls were adorned with geometric patterns, clothing took on embellishments, and functional vessels were painted with scenes of everyday life. Indeed, design was born!

Since then we have never looked back. In everything that we make, design is now considered. Not only do we create things out of necessity, but we look and see how we can make them aesthetically pleasing. Although I’m sure that it was discovered long before he was on this earth, I think that Frank Lloyd Wright stated it best when he said “Form follows function - that has been misunderstood. Form and function should be one, joined in a spiritual union.”

As an adult, I have continued to observe design; it has become my passion. I love the history of it, where it is now and where it is going. I constantly see influences in design that the global market has created. As I observe, I wish to share, which is the inspiration for this blog. My desire is to share with you, my readers, some of what I see, whether it is something that I see at an Interior Design Market, something that a local craftsman is making or an insight that I observe in my travels. Realizing that there is a LOT of information on design, I hope to bring it into a focus that is at once enjoyable and informative.

In short, this blog will act as a filter for my readers as I move through the world of design. I will cover a variety of subjects – one at a time – that hopefully will educate, excite and inspire. Colors, furniture, textiles, art, and finishes are amongst the plethora of subjects that I will cover. I welcome any comments that might further educate or influence me. I’m excited to take this journey and hope that you enjoy reading about all the information that I will share on design!
